在华威郡创立一所新大学的提议在二战后不久就被提出。1960年，大学筹备委员会在Lord Rootes的领导下正式建立，委员会的成员包括考文垂市议会和华威郡议会。双方达成协议，在Gibett Hill旁共同划出400英亩（约1.6平方公里）土地用于建设新大学，1961年英国政府批准了华威大学的建立。

1963年 ，《罗宾斯报告》发表，英国开始兴建新式大学。当时建立的7所大学（东安格利亚大学、埃塞克斯大学、肯特大学、兰开斯特大学、苏塞克斯大学、华威大学、约克大学）通常被称作平板玻璃大学。这个名称是来源于它们的现代建筑设计，在钢或混凝土结构中广泛使用平板玻璃，与以维多利亚建筑风格为主的红砖大学和更古老的古典大学形成鲜明对照。这几所大学也被叫做“莎士比亚大学”，因为除东安格利亚大学之外，其他大学的名字都出现在莎士比亚的作品中。

时任考文垂教区主教Cuthbert Bardsley将大学命名为the University of Warwick。1965年华威大学获得英国皇家特许状，1979年合并了考文垂教育学院，并一步步将校园扩展至大约2.9平方公里，包括一系列的摩登建筑、学术院系、湖泊和林地。

1964年，华威大学招收了小部分研究生，并在1965年10月开始招收了第一批总计450人的本科学生。近几年来，华威大学被看做是英国工党政府（Labor Party，1997-2010年间执政）最青睐的学术机构。2015年4月8日，英国大选工党候选人米利班德（Ed Miliband）来到华威大学发表了竞选演说。

校长Lord Butterworth任期中，华威大学是英国首批将商业运作模式引入高等教育的大学之一，并和商界建立了紧密的联系，挖掘了学术研究的商业价值。同时它还是英国政府一系列旗舰级项目上的学术服务伙伴，包括“国家杰出才能和天赋青年研究院”（National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth）和英国人引以为豪的国家健康系统大学（NHS University）。

2001年二月，IBM向华威捐赠了价值2百万英镑的电脑和软件设施。2004年4月，华威大学收购了国际园艺中心（Horticulture Research International）在Wellebourne和Kirton的分部。同年7月，华威大学被设定为英国工党和英国工会（Trade Union）间重要协议的地点，后来此议案被称为“沃里克协议”（Warwick Agreement）。

2006年6月，华威医学院（Warwick Medical School）在考文垂建立了大学医院（University Hospital Coventry）作为临床医学研究的基地。2007年，华威医学院成为全英首家和英国医学研究委员会建立战略合作的医学院。

2012年，华威大学先后在2月和3月与澳大利亚莫纳什大学和伦敦大学玛丽皇后学院建立了战略合作伙伴关系，签订了一系列细化课题的研究合作项目，其中包括联合研究生、博士生项目，英语、历史、计算机本科课程师资共享等。同年4月，纽约大学城市科学与发展中心宣布了华威大学是其在欧洲唯一的大学合作伙伴。8月，华威大学和其他4所英格兰中部大学：伯明翰大学、莱斯特大学（University of Leicester），拉夫堡大学（Loughborogh University）和诺丁汉大学（University of Nottingham）组成了英格兰中部的M5大学联盟，一个意图于最大化成员机构的研究收入，促使更近距离合作的地域性的集团。

2014年9月13日，中国国务院副总理马凯到访英国华威大学制造工程学院（WMG），代表团中还有中国驻英国大使刘晓明，英国驻中国大使Sebastian Wood。作为中国经济发展领导人物之一的马凯副总理对WMG与工业产业领域的合作项目感到印象深刻。在马凯副总理此次参加第六届中英经济财经对话的访英之行中，WMG也是副总理唯一造访的学术机构。

2014年，华威大学获得”泰晤士报“年度大学称号；同年，华威商学院宣布将在全英最高建筑碎片大厦（The Shard）开设华威商学院（WBS）伦敦校区，开设金融、人力资源非全日制硕士课程，以及MBA和EMBA课程。

2015年年初，华威大学启用新Logo，并宣布将在美国加利福尼亚建造华威大学加利福尼亚校区。

2015年11月，在第三届教育国际论坛上，英国上议院议员，英国华威大学制造工程学院(WMG) 院长、库玛·巴塔查亚勋爵荣获2015年“虹桥奖”。

2018年6月19日，教育部办公厅批准华中科技大学与英国华威大学合作举办工程商业管理硕士学位教育项目终止办学。

在2014/15年泰晤日报&星期日泰晤日报联合发布的英国大学排名中，华威大学在会计与金融、经济学、戏剧、创意与写作、媒体传播等5个学科领域超过牛津大学、剑桥大学登顶，傲视全英。

此外，华威大学还荣获了英国2014/15年度大学称号，泰晤日报给出理由如下：

“今年华威大学在5个领域傲视全英大学，仅比牛津大学少两个。”

经济学

华威大学Economics Department在英国媒体发布的2014年完全大学指南中排名前列。在Research Papers in Economics机构根据IDEAS数据库对全世界所有经济系的排名中，华威大学经济系位列英国第3位，欧洲第5位（2013年4月数据）。在2008年英国大学“研究成果评估检查”中，华威大学经济系在经济学和计量经济学领域位列全英第3位。在上海交通大学最新发布的2015年《世界大学学术排名》中，华威大学综合排名第92位，经济学科位居第34位。

华威商学院

华威商学院（Warwick Business School）简称WBS，是英国华威大学旗下最大的学术院系，是英国第一家获得三重认证的商学院(Triple Accreditation)。华威商学院前身是成立于1967年的工商学院（School of Industrial and Business Studies），是一所年轻但实力卓越的国际化商学院。华威商学院被誉为英国最顶尖的商学院之一，近几年在各大排名中稳居英国前5名，世界前30名；在2017年《金融时报》全球排名中，其金融硕士项目超越牛津大学，成为全英第1，并位列世界第9。华威商学院是世界顶级公司的“Target school”，每年为管理咨询与金融投资领域输送大量人才。

2017年《经济学人》（The Economist）的全球商学院MBA排名，华威商学院位列第18位，英国第1位。在“Distance MBA"全球商学院排名中，华威商学院稳居英国第1，世界第2。在QS发布的2017年Business & Management榜单中，华威商学院高居英国前5名，并跻身于全球第26名。

数学院

华威大学数学院，Warwick Mathematics Institution （WMI），在英国及全球各大主流排名中连续多年都位于前列，居欧洲前十。自1965年由Sir Christopher Zeeman教授建立之初便是世界顶级数学研究院之一，拥有60位全职教授及20余位教职员工，对最近二十年数学研究发展有着瞩目的推动力，其中马丁·海尔（Martin Hairer）教授更是由于在随机偏微分方程上的杰出贡献，而获得了堪称数学界诺贝尔奖的“菲尔兹奖”（Fields Medal）。在REF 2014 英国大学官方排名中，华威大学数学系在数学领域位列第三，仅次于剑桥大学和牛津大学。（该排名每七年更新一次，其排名结果直接决定政府为各大学研究经费的拨款数额。）在最新的2018年上海交通大学最新发布的《世界大学学术排名》中，华威数学专业在学术方面位居世界第11位。QS在2019最新大学排名中华威数学专业位居世界第20，统计与运筹专业位居世界第16。即便在一向不青睐英国院校的USNews排名里，华威数学系仍位居世界第23位（2018年）。WMI拥有数学系和统计系两大院系，并与经济学院、商学院、计算机系、物理系和哲学系均开设了交叉学科，本科阶段华威数学院各专业录取要求与牛津剑桥数学系堪称全英最高录取标准，不仅要求在A-Level 考到A*A*（数学+进阶数学）A的成绩，也要在剑桥STEP考试中达到至少grade2。博士阶段华威统计系与牛津大学拥有合作项目，即OxWaSP，博士生可在牛津大学学习一年，随后在华威大学学习三年，此项目意在21世纪数据化时代里培养最为杰出的统计学家。华威大学数学院还与计算机科学院，华威商学院联合组建了离散数学中心并开设了离散数学专业，华威是英国第一个拥有该专业的院校。申请者无法申请该专业的硕士学位，其硕士学位只能通过本硕连读的方式获得。注：华威计算机科学院在REF 2014 英国大学官方排名中排名全英第二。学院规模较小，并以计算机理论方面最为突出。

华威大学文化政策研究中心（Center for cultural policy studies）成立于1995年，该中心教学与研究重点集中在文化管理、文化政策、媒体通信、社会企业、创意与媒体等方面。现共有四个传媒类专业（硕士课程），分别是创意与媒体企业，全球媒体与传播，国际文化政策与管理，艺术企业与发展。学生还可在本中心完成有关文化政策、创意产业（博士项目）的研究。该中心基于“华威模式”的小班教学，核心课程每班20~30人，不采取大型讲座的授课方式。传媒类专业在2015年Times（泰晤士报）和完全大学指南两个排名中荣登榜首，在The Guardian（卫报）通讯与传播类排名中位列第二名。在2014年英国大学“研究成果评估检查”中，文化政策研究中心90%的学科被评为4*（国际领先水平）和3*（国际优秀水平）。
